OvisOCR3 — Hardware Requirements & GPU Compatibility
VisionFunctionsOvisOCR3 is a compact multimodal model for OCR and document understanding from ATH-MaaS, built on Qwen3.5-0.8B. A single model covers document parsing into JSON or Markdown with LaTeX formulas and HTML tables, general OCR, key information extraction, figure captioning, and cross-page table reconstruction, selected through task-specific prompts. It was trained in four stages: continued pretraining, mid-training, on-policy distillation, and reinforcement learning. At about 0.85 billion parameters, a Q4 build needs under 1 GB of memory, so it runs on almost any hardware. The context window is 262,144 tokens. It is released under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows commercial use, and was published on October 21, 2026. Its card reports 96.74 on OmniDocBench1.6, 88.8 on MDPBench, and 88.8 on OCRBench, the best result in its comparison on the last two. The card gives a vLLM example and ships the task prompts that define each output format.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much VRAM does OvisOCR3 need?
OvisOCR3 requires 0.9 GB of VRAM at Q4_K_M, or 2.1 GB at BF16. Full 262K context adds up to 1.6 GB (2.4 GB total).
VRAM = Weights + KV Cache + Overhead
Weights = 853M × 4.8 bits ÷ 8 = 0.5 GB
KV Cache + Overhead ≈ 0.4 GB (at 2K context + ~0.3 GB framework)
Fit ratings and hardware model lists check this model with room for a 16K-token context, which needs a little more memory.
KV Cache + Overhead ≈ 1.9 GB (at full 262K context)
VRAM usage by quantization
What's the best quantization for OvisOCR3?
For OvisOCR3, Q4_K_M (0.9 GB) offers the best balance of quality and VRAM usage. Q5_K_S (0.9 GB) provides better quality if you have the VRAM. The smallest option is Q2_K at 0.7 GB.
VRAM requirement by quantization
★ Recommended — best balance of quality and VRAM usage.
Can I run OvisOCR3 on a Mac?
Yes — MacBook Air 13" M3 (8 GB) and 145 other Macs can run OvisOCR3. Apple Silicon uses unified memory, so the model shares RAM with the system. At Q4_K_M you need at least 0.9 GB of usable unified memory (RAM minus macOS overhead).
Can I run OvisOCR3 locally?
Yes — OvisOCR3 can run locally on consumer hardware. Popular tools include Ollama, LM Studio, and llama.cpp.
How fast is OvisOCR3?
At Q4_K_M, OvisOCR3 can reach ~5581 tok/s on AMD Instinct MI350X. On NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090: ~762 tok/s. Speed depends mainly on GPU memory bandwidth. Real-world results typically within ±20%.
tok/s = (bandwidth GB/s ÷ model GB) × efficiency
Example: NVIDIA B200 → 8000 ÷ 0.86 × 0.65 = ~6047 tok/s
Estimated speed at Q4_K_M (0.9 GB)
Real-world results typically within ±20%. Speed depends on batch size, quantization kernel, and software stack.
